How to Identify the Purpose in Every Season

Nothing in our lives happens by chance. God is intentional about every experience we go through, whether challenging or enjoyable. Long before we became citizens of this earth, God already knew what our lives would look like. Ephesians 2:10 For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. He was intentional with us then, and He is still intentional with us now. God has organized our lives into specific times and seasons and has given purpose to each season. To identify the purpose in your season, you need to:

1. Recognize the Season

There are different types of seasons, with the major ones being learning, waiting, serving, or transition. You may be in one season or a combination of multiple seasons. Either way, take the time to discern what kind of season you are in. Reflect on your recent experiences and how they have impacted you. By doing this, you will be able to identify your current season.

2. Seek God’s Guidance

Spend some time in prayer, asking God for his direction and guidance on how to navigate your season. Study His word. The Bible is so complete that it provides direction on every season you could possibly go through. Romans 15:4 For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope and overflow with confidence in His promises. As you pray, one of the things you may notice is that you receive instructions from God’s word. When you study God’s word as He directs you, you will have a clearer understanding of what your season is, and why you are in it—your purpose.

3. Identify What God Is Developing

With every season comes a learning opportunity ordained by God to build character, teach you something, or prepare you for the next season. Reflect on your life and consider what your recent experiences may be pointing out. For example, if you are in the waiting season, you may notice that God is teaching you patience and trust, or drawing you into a closer relationship with Him. On the other hand, during your serving season, God may be teaching you humility, how to steward your talents and gifts, or even preparing you to lead in the capacity in which you are currently serving.

4. Align with God’s will

Most of the time, the journey becomes longer when you try to resist the reason for the season. Instead of resisting the season, submit to God and be patient through the pruning and refining process. During this time, God removes things that no longer serve a purpose, such as habits, relationships, or situations that hinder your spiritual growth. As you remain patient, stay faithful and avoid complaining, as it can prolong the process.

5. Evaluate the Fruit of the Season

Journaling is a great way to reflect on and evaluate your season and the fruits it has brought. What lessons have you learned? What skills have you developed? What new relationships have you formed? What habits and relationships did you have to let go of? What would you consider the fruit of this season? It is important to record your reflections because you may need them later.

As God takes you through different seasons, trust His timing and plans for you. Some seasons are for waiting and sowing, while others are for rest and harvest. Every season has a purpose. Trust God to guide you through.
