Enter into God’s Rest

Life could be really busy, with 24 hours feeling insufficient. It seems like we are constantly on a big mission to make headway. First, we put in a lot of effort to get into the best school or learn a skill, and then we strive to graduate successfully. Then, it’s as if the real struggle begins—job hunting, securing a job, but the struggle does not end; it continues. The need to excel at work and be a force to reckon with in every area of life arises. Where does it really end? Is there a rest? What does it mean to enter into God’s rest?

God calls us to His rest, but what does that even mean? Matthew 11:28-30 —

28Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.

It is exhausting to keep up with the fast pace of life, carrying the weight of our worries, fears, hopes, and pains. How about accepting Jesus’ invitation to come into His rest and transfer all our burdens to Him? Entering into God’s rest means choosing to let go of all the baggage and laying it at the feet of Jesus. It is easier said than done, but what do you gain by holding on to all the worries, fears, and pain? Only a heavy heart laden with sadness. However, with complete trust in God, we can fully rely on His promises. This is because we know that even when things do not go the way we hoped they would, we are rest assured that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. (Romans 28:8).

Relying solely on your own efforts is a great barrier to trusting God and entering into His rest. When you notice yourself falling into the trap of self-sufficiency, pause, take a step back, and set aside time to be still and reconnect with God.

…by strength shall no man prevail. (1 Samuel 2:9)

As you choose to enter into God’s rest, take a practical step by laying every burden you are carrying at the feet of Jesus. You may pray this short prayer in Jesus’ name:

Father Lord, I lay my burdens at Your feet—(mention every burden you want to lay down, be specific). Help me to stop striving and enter into Your perfect rest. Teach me to trust You completely and find peace in Your presence. Amen.
