Almost everyone says I don’t care what people say about me. I hear this so often, and it makes me wonder how true it is. The reality is that we are social beings and we frequently go about our daily lives relating with people, whether directly or indirectly. This just means that we need to be intentional about holding on to who we are in Christ when the world tries to define us.
I can not deny ever losing touch with who I am in Christ. I think many people have been in seasons where they questioned who they are. I have been low on cash many times in my life, and in those moments, reading through Psalm 23:1, “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing,” seems like a joke to me. It is much easier to believe this verse when you don’t have to worry about where your dinner would come from or how you would pay your rent. In moments of self-doubt, do you stay grounded in what God says about you? Or do you drown in the sea of self pity and doubt?
Take a few minutes to reflect on these questions:
- Who are you when no one’s looking?
- What labels have people put on you that made you question your worth?
- What determines your worth?
- What is the foundation of your identity?
- How do you react to your mistakes?
If you ever find yourself thinking: what does God even think about me? It may be time to find out your Christain Identity.
Here are 5 steps you should take to ensure you stay grounded in your Christian Identity:
- Study God’s word and ask the Holy Spirit to show you what God is saying about you.
Never study the word of God without the ultimate study guide, the Holy Spirit. Just before Jesus’ physical body left the earth, He promised to send the Holy Spirit to teach us all things and remind us of everything He has said (John 14:26). We can not fully understand what God has said about us without engaging the Holy Spirit.
God says you are:
- Chosen and loved (1 Peter 2:9)
- A new creation, your old nature of sin is washed away (2 Corinthians 5:17)
- Forgiven and redeemed. (Colossians 1:13–14)
- A child of God (Romans 8:16)
- God’s beloved (John 3:16)
- Worth God’s love and sacrifice (Romans 5:8)
- Called out of darkness into His Marvellous light (1 Peter 2:9)
- The salt of the earth (Matthew 5:13)
- The light of the world. A city set on a hill that cannot be hidden. (Matthew 5:14)
- Secured & Protected (Psalm 91:4)
- Free from the yoke of sin and bondage (Galatians 5:1)
The above are just some of what God says about you. You can pray that the Holy Spirit will reveal what God says about you and your season as you study the Bible. Remember that God always has a word for you for every season.
- Say out loud what God says about you.
Romans 10:10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.
Never shy away from speaking out loud what God says about you, because proclaiming God’s word over your life helps your belief system. If you consistently speak life to yourself, you will begin to see life in every dead situation and believe what God says about you, even above what any other person thinks. Let it be your daily decision to always reaffirm yourself with what God says about you
- Surround yourself with Godly affirmation
It is important to surround yourself with Godly affirmations. Whether it is the people you interact with, your social media, screen background, the music you listen to, or any other thing that might be a road to your spirit and mind, ensure you are grounded in Godly affirmation. If you constantly expose yourself to people or things that pollute your acceptance of who God says you are, you may have a harder time believing it yourself.
- Speak God’s truth over lies
Many times, the devil likes to hide in the corner of our minds and ask, “Did God really say…?” or “Are you really worthy of …?” When such negative thoughts and lies come to your mind, always remember to confront them with God’s truth. For example:
- Lie – You are alone →→→→→→ Truth – You are not alone. Isaiah 41:10 “Do not fear, for I am with you. Do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will give you strength, and for sure, I will help you. Yes, I will hold you up with My right hand that is right and good.”
- Lie – You are too lost in sin for God to forgive you →→→→→→ Truth – God sacrificed Himself for you even when you were lost in sin. You are never too far gone for God. Romans 5:8 “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us”.
- Lie – Your past sin will stop God’s love for you →→→→→→ Truth – Your past sin can never stop God’s love for you. Isaiah 43:25 “I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions, for my own sake, and remembers your sins no more.”
- Stay Connected to God Through Prayer
Prayer is not just saying a few words out of routine or mindlessly; it is communicating with God, and the more time you spend with God, the more grounded you will be in your Christian identity.
You’re God’s beloved, always remember that. Nothing can ever change that. Nothing can ever separate you from the love of God. So when social media, your pain & past, culture & popular opinions, remember WHOSE you are.
